Six ways to reduce fuel loss in your fleet

For most transport operators fuel is among the largest running costs, and it is also one of the hardest to control. Fuel can be lost through theft, leaks, long idling, poor routes and heavy-footed driving. The first step is to measure it.

1. Measure the tank, not just the receipts

A fuel level sensor in the tank records refuelling and sudden drops as they happen, with time and location. That gives you evidence instead of guesses when a number does not add up.

2. Set drop alerts

An alert for a sudden fall in level, especially when the vehicle is parked, lets you react while it is still happening instead of at month end.

3. Compare vehicles and drivers

When consumption per trip or per distance is tracked, a vehicle or driver that uses much more than similar ones stands out. That may point to a mechanical problem or to driving habits.

4. Cut idling

Engines left running while waiting add up quickly. Idle-time reports show where it happens, so you can agree simple rules with your drivers.

5. Watch speed and harsh driving

Overspeeding and harsh braking raise fuel use and wear. Speed alerts and driver reports make it easy to coach drivers using facts.

6. Plan routes and stops

Trip history shows detours and unauthorised stops. Even small route changes repeated every day save fuel over a year.

Start simple

You do not need to do everything at once. Many fleets begin with GPS tracking and add fuel sensors on the vehicles that use the most fuel. See our fuel monitoring and fleet management page, try the savings calculator there, or ask us for a quote.
