Choosing a GPS tracker for a boda boda, a car or a truck

There is no single best tracker. The right choice depends on the vehicle, what you want to monitor and how it will be installed.

Boda bodas and motorcycles

  • Compact and waterproof, because bikes are exposed to rain and dust.
  • Low power use, so the bike battery is not drained when parked.
  • Movement and tow alerts to warn you if the bike is moved when it should not be.

Cars, SUVs and pickups

  • A hardwired tracker is hidden and tamper-resistant, and supports a backup battery and an engine cut-off relay.
  • A plug-in OBD tracker installs in a minute with no wiring, which suits car hire, but is easier for a thief to find.

Trucks, buses and machinery

  • Wide 12/24V input range.
  • Sensor inputs for fuel level and temperature.
  • Driver ID with RFID tags so reports show who was driving.

Trailers, containers and equipment

A battery-powered magnetic tracker with long standby time works without wiring and can send an alert when it leaves a zone.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Does it work with the app and platform I will use?
  • Does it have a backup battery and tamper alerts?
  • Who installs it, and who supports it afterwards?
