Fleet telematics is growing across Africa, but the picture is uneven. Here is a short overview based on published research.
South Africa leads
According to Berg Insight research reported by SMART Security Solutions, South Africa had an estimated 2.3 million active fleet management systems in commercial vehicle fleets at the end of 2023. The report expected growth of about 10.3% a year, to 3.8 million systems by 2028. The market is described as relatively mature, although many installations are basic tracking rather than full fleet management.
The rest of Africa has more room to grow
The same report splits the continent into South Africa, sub-Saharan Africa excluding South Africa, and Northern Africa. South Africa leads adoption, Northern Africa follows, and sub-Saharan Africa outside South Africa is the least developed. Industry representatives quoted say that the rest of Africa has considerably more untapped opportunity than South Africa at this stage, though weak economies, currency swings and political instability make it harder to operate.
What this means for fleet owners
- Tracking is becoming normal for professional fleets, so customers and insurers increasingly expect it.
- Basic tracking is only the start. The value grows when you add fuel data, driver behaviour and cameras.
- Local support matters. Installation, calibration and fast help are what keep systems working in real conditions.
